Mobile commerce plummeted in 2020 as Australians focused on their computers rather than their phones as they started working from home due to COVID. But this year, mobile commerce made a startling comeback. From a 5-year low in 2020, when only 55% of Aussies were shopping or making payments on mobile devices, this year 82% are engaging in mobile commerce. Gen Zs are particularly mobile-friendly with 98% online shopping or making payments via their mobile devices*

A quarter of Australians now shop on social media, a figure that jumps to 1-in-3 for consumers under 40. A further 1-in-5 Australians follow their favourite brands on social to stay across sales, discounts and deals. A quarter of social shoppers (25%) buy through social channels at least weekly, with the average social shopper spending $106 per month on those channels over the past 2 years.

COVID-19 drove 1-in-6 Australians to start shopping regularly online and saw consumers move the majority (52%) of their shopping and bill payments online, up from 38% pre-COVID. While some Australians will head back to brick-and-mortar stores, consumers plan to keep doing almost half (49%) of their shopping and bill payments online post-pandemic.

Nearly one-third of Australians have added an item to the cart, then waited to receive an offer or voucher before completing a purchase. While 44% make impulse purchases online, they’re more likely to do so on mobile devices (37%) than laptops (24%). A strong program of discounts and deals is still key for increasing likelihood to purchase.
Meet the savvy online
Almost half (46%) of Australians prefer to buy from a business that’s environmentally and socially responsible and 18% have boycotted a brand because of their values, rising to 1-in-4 for Gen Z consumers. What’s more, one third of Australian consumers are willing to pay more for products that are green.
